Geomatics Services at Glendoe Hydro Scheme
Star Net was recently contacted at short notice to provide survey services at the £140m Glendoe Hydro Scheme near Fort Augustus. The 5m diameter headrace tunnel had suffered a collapse and power generation had been suspended.
Glendoe was the first major hydro power station built in Scotland for 50 years and it has a 100MW capacity. Star Net is working closely with Scottish and Southern Energy and the scheme designer, Jacobs, to provide accurate survey data.
Star Net has installed new primary control stations on the site to allow carrying out a topographic survey of the ground surface above the collapse and also survey the line of the tunnel 2km underground it. Several visits to the site were required to position boreholes at the collapse point. Trimble GPS equipment has been utilised to carry out the surface survey work and high-spec Trimble S6 total station instruments for the underground work.
